The legal name of the soon-to-be incorporated Queen Charlotte/Skidegate Landing area will be ‘Village of Queen Charlotte’, the incorporation study committee decided Tuesday evening.
The committee voted 8 to 2 in favour of that name, following a telephone poll Monday that showed support for it from most of those called.
The survey, which tried to contact everyone in the community, saw 209 people in favour of the ‘Village of Queen Charlotte’, with 167 favouring ‘Queen Charlotte City’. That works out to 55-percent for ‘Village of Queen Charlotte’ and 44-percent in favour of ‘Queen Charlotte City’.
“I believe we have done our jobs as diligently. as thoroughly and as competently as we are capable,” committee chair Leslie Johnson said just before the vote, “I believe it is up to us to pass a motion to recommend a name to the ministry.”
Committee member Greg Martin, interested in incorporation for many years, made the motion, which then carried.
The committee will now recommend to Victoria that the name become the legal name of the community, although as one committee member noted, it will be just the legal name and residents will still be able to call it anything they like, including Queen Charlotte City.
The community will incorporate before the municipal elections in November, and residents will vote for its first-ever mayor and council then.
