Work is underway on Haida Gwaii's Timber Supply Review, a process that results in determining the Allowable Annual Cut for the islands. Provincial chief forester Jim Snetsinger was on Haida Gwaii last week (Oct. 28) to meet with representatives from the Council of the Haida Nation and the Haida Gwaii Forest District.According to the Haida Gwaii Reconciliation Act, a Management Council will be established and will be given the power to establish the Allowable Annual Cut for Haida Gwaii. This is normally the job of the chief forester alone. The council must determine an AAC at least once every 10 years.According to a Ministry of Forests spokesperson Cheekwan Ho, Mr. Snetsinger had a productive meeting with the parties and will provide the council with the required information to make the determination by March 31, 2011."We have a joint technical working group making good progress on the required work," said Ms Ho.The Haida Nation's Stewardship Law, passed at the House of Assembly in September, describes the way the province and the nation will operate in joint management of lands and resources on the islands and confirms the ground rules for setting up the management council.According to a report from the House of Assembly in Haida Laas, "the amount to be cut is unlikely to exceed 800,000 m3 a year.
