October 14, 1944 - July 16, 2019
Gerry was born in Montreal, PQ on October 10, 1944 and passed away in Nanaimo, BC on July 16, 2019.
He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Jane Johnson of Ottawa and his beloved aunt and uncle, Frances and Philip Perrault of Montreal, PQ.
He is survived by son Stan, daughter- in-law Charlotte, grandson Cole, and granddaughter Maria, all of Nanaimo, and his sister Frances Ann
Johnson, niece Naomi Fudemoto and her children Matthew and Emma, all of Ottawa, Ontario.
Raised in Montreal, Cowansville, PQ, , and Ottawa, he answered the call of the west in 1966 where he started his lifelong career in the forest industry in Port Hardy, BC, transferring in 1968 to Campbell River, and in 1973 to Haida Gwaii.
His love for and dedication to the people, lands, and waters of Haida Gwaii were unconditional. He devoted his time to his family, his work, gathering food, and giving selflessly to his community and the islands. For many years he served on the Port Clements Village Council both as Mayor and Councilor and contributed his time to other bodies - Regional District, Gwaii Trust, Port Clements Museum and TV Society are just a few examples.
He left Haida Gwaii in 2013 for medical reasons and chose Nanaimo as his home to be close to his son and grandchildren.
A celebration of Gerry's life will take place on Haida Gwaii in 2020.
